Looking for some earnest, digital folk from Ireland? Check out these tender-hearted troubadours I review for Metromix. They make the ladies weep like Joyce would have if he wasn’t a master of language and obfuscation.
The Guggenheim Grotto
Happy the Man
[Scott Thill, Metromix]
The Guggenheim Grotto wear their winsome hearts on their sleeves. Whether it’s the airy, romantic balladry of tracks like “Sunshine Makes Me High” and “Her Beautiful Ideas” or the orchestral acoustics of songs such as “The Dragon” and “Everyman,” “Happy the Man” offers little in the way of subterfuge. Like Ireland itself, the Guggenheim Grotto’s latest effort is a windswept experience. Opener “Fee Da Da Dee” tips its hat to “willow trees,” while spare closer “Heaven Has a Heart” offers up wise advice on the inevitable passing of time and love. It’s not James Joyce, but it’s not bad either.
