Theresa Andersson, New Orleans’ Swedish Sonic Hummingbird

The Labor Day holiday was nice, but the post-holiday deluge is fearsome. And not just because a slew of my Metromix have rolled in, including this one from Swedish export Theresa Andersson, who packed her bags and moved to New Orleans at 18. What’s fearsome is the deluge that almost beat down Andersson’s New Orleans again, as well as those from other hurricanes on the way. It’s a wonder she can stay such an optimistic songbird in the face of such devastation. Or is that hummingbird? I tackled her for Metromix and Wired.

Theresa Andersson, Hummingbird Go!
“Hummingbird, Go!” is an ambitious stack of tracks, delivered in Andersson’s ethereally pleasing pipes. “Na Na Na” is a symphonic good time, while the crafty cabaret of “The Waltz” is an orchestral delight. The angular thump of “Birds Fly Away” is clever doo-wop revisionism, and the shimmering “Inaan Du Gar” turns hypnotically on the axis of her native tongue. Meanwhile, the title track veers close enough to ambient tribal rhythms to echo Dead Can Dance. Girl’s got skills. MORE @ METROMIX

Theresa Andersson, One-Woman Band
Although Swedish-born New Orleans transplant Theresa Andersson uploaded an impromptu video performance of her tune “Na Na Na” on June 8, it has quickly passed 600,000 views and climbing. The reason? She plays everything herself, in her kitchen, using everything but the sink. “The kitchen sounds amazing, it has wonderful, natural reverb,” Andersson explained. MORE @ WIRED
