I’ve been feeling like crap for days now, which means now is the time to talk about Metallica. I did just that for Wired over the weekend, and heckled the band for its Napster stance and Master of Puppets. I also chatted about The Chemical Brothers’ cool embrace of parkour, CGI and Google Earth. Read it and creep.
Can Metallica Resurrect Puppets, Save Face?
According to James Hetfield, producer Rick Rubin wanted what every jilted Metallica fan wants: A return to the glory days. But is that possible, after everything that has happened to the band, and its once-proud loyalists? Even if it isn’t, the band is going to shoot for it anyway.
Exhibit A? Master of Puppets is popping up everywhere in the media assault for Metallica’s latest effort Death Magnetic. The most revealing culprit lately is an interview Hetfield conducted for VH1 and MTV.
“[Rick Rubin] told us, ‘Think back to Master of Puppets,'” Hetfield told VH1. “‘What were you doing? What were you thinking? What were your influences? What bothered you? What was around you? Where did that hunger come from?'”
Chemical Brothers Solicit Vids Via Google Earth
Want to contribute to a video for a storied electro-beat duo? Got time to shoot a few seconds of footage and upload it to Google Earth? You might just get your moment in the spotlight, buddy.
Although it is going to be hard to beat The Chemical Brothers’ parkour-inspired CGI video for “Midnight Madness,” Tom Rowlands and Ed Simons are giving it a try and crowdsourcing visuals in honor of their forthcoming greatest-hits collection Brotherhood, out September 2 from Astralwerks. The duo is asking for fans and any other interested parties to create two to 20 seconds of video inspired by their favorite Chemical Brothers’ tracks, then upload and tag the goods to Google Earth by August 25.
Expired: Fishing With John. Wired? Fishing With Ween
The last time Listening Post checked in with Dean Ween, he was naked in front of his computer and calling downloaders “ass tumors.” This time around, we’re in front of the computer, and he’s on a boat with The Butthole Surfers catching sharks.
So far, Ween has shot five episodes of his online fishing show Brownie Troop F.S., which hews closer to Bass Masters than Fishing With John, truth be told. They can be viewed on the Brownie site, or in an upcoming hi-def DVD, if Dean is to be believed.
