Vetiver’s Dream Folk Grows On You

Call if freak folk, call it nu-folk or just call it whatever the folk you want. But mellowed, measured folk is back with a vengeance.

Andy Cabic’s Vetiver is one band riding the resurgence of music made by earnest songwriters married to chillout soundcraft. And his band is mighty relaxed and mighty fine. I reviewed its latest effort for Metromix.

From the unfurling bliss of opener “Rolling Sea” to the psychedelic ambience of the closer “At Forest Edge,” Vetiver’s fourth release is a hush comfortable in its mellow skin. The optimistic bounce of “More of This” and the smoky groove of “Another Reason to Go” aside, Cabic keeps the pace deliberate and spacey. The pop downstrum of “Everyday” and the high lonesome of “Through the Front Door” reverberate into life, while the light drum tracking on “Sister” and “On the Other Side” are organic enough, given their mechanics.
