The Silent Years’ Globe-Trotting Rock

Like the Flaming Lips and Mercury Rev before them, The Silent Years have a gift for bizarro pop and rock that explodes into noise as easily as it rides subtle, skewered grooves. It’s not a given that they can achieve the same longevity as those other legendary lifers, but if their latest effort The Globe is any indication, they’ll make a splash that lasts awhile. “The Globe” is ambitious, which in itself is refreshing these days. The surround-sound freakout of “Climb on My Back” is a crunchy, epic delight. The angular math-funk of “Magic Ropes” stumbles and speeds for a breakneck two-and-half minutes. Sometimes the band trips up trying to close the deal; the airy acoustics of “On Our Way Home” feels like it never gets there. But overall, the Silent Years succeed admirably in their ambition. MORE
